I had a non-networked chat with a colleague of mine the other day about this course and my experiences in it. Colin asked me how I was going, in which I told him that I was really struggling, as I found all this blogging incredibly time consuming and not very user-friendly. I also discussed the idea that I went through this phase of really hating the idea of completing education in an unfamiliar way, and the challenge of working out whether I was 'doing it' right. There was a massive learning curve, as I had never blogged before and didn't know how to. Plus there was the issue of having to use other technologies such as Diggio and Feedly and that I didn't really understand the purpose of them.
This is what he said when I told him all of this: He explained how I had been so inculcated into an antiquated way of looking at finding information and learning from it. He said that the reason I was time poor was because I was spending all my time looking for information when I should be using systems to show me and find the information for me.
I asked him what he meant by this..... He said, why are you not using Feedly to track information for you? Do you use and track RSS feeds? Let me show you how I do it.... He then proceeded to show me the software that he uses and all of the information that he needs is sent to him, tracked and he then puts into files in that software to digitally track information over a period of time. Then he just pulls this info and inserts into a blog/ paper whatever, without having to spend hours trawling for info.
WHY ON EARTH DID I NOT KNOW THIS???? Now I get it. Now I understand why David was suggesting the use of Feedly etc. It is a mechanism to be able to track the digital learnings of others and a one stop shop for me to check what everyone else is writing about, rather than me going to each individual site. Simple I know, but I truly did not understand this until my very fortuitous conversation. I still think that I am at the beginning of working out how to use all these things efficiently and effectively, but I needed to let you in on my sad secret of just not getting it!!
